Get a clear view of the adult content advertising policies of today’s main social media and what they mean for you as a content creator.

It’s important to be respectful and responsible when sharing adult content on any social media platform.

In general, all Content Creators must make sure their content is legal, non-exploitative and appropriate for the platform’s audience. Here are the 5 rules of adult content and social media:

1- Explicit or graphic content: Even if a social media platform allows adult content to some extent, be mindful of what you’re posting. Could it offend some of your followers? Make sure to “read the room” and ask yourself if such content could be flagged as inappropriate by members of your social media audience.

2- Marked content: Some platforms allow you to mark your content as sensitive to help prevent it from being exposed to people who may not want to see it. Using this feature appropriately will avoid you troubles and may even increase engagement on your posts.

3- Consent: Don’t share adult content without consent or use it to harass or exploit others. You must have the consent of any person depicted in the content you post on social media and steer clear of content that glorifies sexual exploitation or violence.

4- Audience: All social media platforms are used by people of all ages, so be mindful of your audience. If the platform you use to share sensitive content doesn’t allow you to mark your content, consider using warnings when appropriate.

5- Community guidelines: Each social media platform has its own policies and guidelines regarding adult content. Following them will prevent your content from being removed, your account being suspended, or even facing legal consequences.

Always consider your audience, the potential impact of your content and the guidelines of each platform. Speaking of which:

Instagram

Instagram has a strict policy against nudity and sexual content, including sexual intercourse, masturbation, and close-ups of buttocks or genitals.

However, they allow some “artistic” or “educational” nudity, such as breastfeeding, post-mastectomy scarring, or artistic depictions of the human body. Light and sexy outfits, swimwear and tight-fitting clothes are also allowed, but nothing sexually suggestive.

Not respecting Instagram’s adult content policy may result in:

  • Temporary block: Limits your profile’s functions, including comments, likes, follows and direct messages for a period of time that varies from a few hours to a few weeks.
  • Shadowban: Limit your content’s visibility to your followers. Your content won’t show up in the search bar and won’t appear on the explore page or as suggested content.
  • Permanent suspension: Usually, a permanent suspension can’t be undone. You can attempt to recover your account by reporting it as hacked, but having a backup account on hand will prevent you from having to start over if that doesn’t work.

Pro: Great for posting visual content such as short videos and building niche audiences

Con: Pretty strict rules and guidelines regarding adult content.

Twitter

Twitter has a more relaxed approach to adult content than Instagram, although the platform has rules regarding pornography, graphic violence or content that promotes sexual services.

The platform has a “sensitive content” warning feature that allows you to hide adult content from potentially inappropriate audiences. Using that feature to mark your account and adult content will ensure your account never gets suspended.

Pro: The go-to platform for adult content.

Con: Building an engaged audience is more challenging.

Facebook

Facebook and Instagram are owned by Meta, so both platforms have similar policies regarding adult content.

Under no circumstances should your content explicitly promote sexual activity. However, feel free to get creative and suggest what you can’t say with emojis (avoid being too suggestive), double entendre and non-nude visual content.

Pro: Still the most popular social media platform with 2.96 billion accounts (2023)

Con: Strict rules and guidelines regarding adult content.

TikTok

If you’re planning to post content on TikTok, make sure it’s appropriate for all audiences. The platform has a zero-tolerance policy for adult content, including nudity, sexual activity and sexualized content.

Similarly to Facebook and Instagram, don’t hesitate to post sexy, non-nude content and captions using emojis and double entendre, but avoid sexually suggestive content.

Pro: An excellent platform for gaining followers with short videos and trends.

Con: Zero tolerance for nudity and sexualized content.

YouTube

YouTube remains an excellent social media for video content creators, despite being a family-friendly platform.

Videos depicting Nudity, pornography and sexual activity are prohibited.

However, discussing topics related to sex and pornography is allowed.

The good side of that is YouTube has been one of the (if not the) most perennial platforms and remains a safe and attractive video-focused social media for all audiences.

Pro: The go-to platform for high-quality, longer videos.

Con: YouTube’s content policy can be limiting for adult content creators.

Overall, studying what other Content Creators share on the same social media platform(s) you are planning to use will help you define the line between the Do’s and Don’ts.
